The Gadsden Arts Center & Museum in Quincy has earned national reaccreditation from the American Alliance of Museums, placing it among a small percentage of museums nationwide to hold the designation.
Gadsden Arts first earned accreditation in 2016 and received reaccreditation this year following an 18-month review process. Of an estimated 33,000 museums nationwide, 2.9% are accredited. Gadsden Arts is one of 58 accredited museums in Florida.
“I am so proud of Gadsden Arts,” Director and CEO Grace Robinson said. “This is a huge undertaking made possible by our generous community of dedicated donors, volunteers, and staff.”
The accreditation process includes an extensive self-study and a site visit by a team of peer reviewers. The American Alliance of Museums’ Accreditation Commission, an independent body of museum professionals, reviews the self-study and visiting committee’s report before making a decision.
According to information provided by Gadsden Arts, the museum was noted for exemplary practices in all areas during both of its accreditation reviews.
Robinson, who also serves as an accreditation peer reviewer for the American Alliance of Museums, said earning accreditation twice is a highlight of her professional career and is particularly significant for a small museum serving a rural area.
“This achievement belongs to all of the people who support and guide Gadsden Arts,” Robinson said. “The amazing programs made possible by accreditation benefit everyone we serve.”
The American Alliance of Museums’ accreditation program has been in place for more than 50 years. The process evaluates museum operations and practices, including how institutions manage resources and maintain financial and ethical accountability to the public.
The Gadsden Arts Center & Museum offers local, regional, national and international traveling exhibitions, cultural events and free educational programs for children, youth and families.
The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, with free admission for families on Saturdays.
