Two properties in the Havana area have been recognized as March’s Yard of the Month selections, highlighting both a local business and a residential property noted for their seasonal landscaping.
The commercial Yard of the Month award goes to Katie’s Cakes and Gifts, located at 108 E. 7th Ave. The shop is owned by Katie Gainey and Karen Burke.
Havana Garden Club members said the property was selected for its bright spring display, which features vibrant green pots filled with colorful dianthus and petunias. The arrangement is complemented by bright balloons and seasonal window paintings, creating a cheerful streetscape along East Seventh Avenue.
The residential Yard of the Month award was presented to Jimmy and Mary Jo Sasser, whose home at 306 Live Oak Lane East stood out to the committee this month.
According to the committee, the Sassers are well known in their neighborhood for maintaining a carefully kept yard largely on their own. A blooming peach tree drew particular attention this month, adding a striking seasonal feature to the property.
The Yard of the Month committee encourages community participation and welcomes nominations from residents.
Because committee members are not able to travel every street in the area each month, residents are invited to nominate their own home or a neighbor’s yard for consideration. Any property within the 32333 zip code is eligible.
To submit a nomination, residents can call 850-539-8191 and leave a message.
