Once the crown jewel of Gulf Power’s lineup of electric generating plants, Sneads’ Plant Scholz now looms o’er the landscape silent and deserted. No more does thick, black coal-fired smoke billow from its chimneys, and no more do the giant turbines spin. The plant closed in 2015 after more than 60 years of service. This 1957 aerial photo from the Florida Archives shows the Scholz complex in its heyday – pumping out energy without rest, 24/7/365 (and 366 on leap years!). Beyond power, the Scholz plant generated jobs – lots of ‘em. Did you or a family member work at the Scholz plant?
