The City of Quincy has a new police chief.
Brian Alexander was sworn in as chief of the Quincy Police Department on June 15, ending a four-month search for the city’s top law enforcement officer. Alexander most recently served as police chief for the City of Gretna, a position he held since 2017.
Alexander succeeds former Police Chief Carlos Hill, who was terminated in February. The appointment marks Quincy’s third police chief in less than three years.
Before becoming Gretna’s police chief, Alexander served for more than 20 years with the Gadsden County Sheriff’s Office, rising through the ranks and building a reputation for professionalism and leadership. In Gretna, he also served as director of public safety, overseeing departmental operations, budgeting, accreditation and community engagement initiatives.
During his tenure in Gretna, city officials credited Alexander with strengthening relationships with residents, faith-based organizations and the business community while maintaining high standards of professionalism within the department.
During his swearing-in ceremony, Alexander said he plans to lead the department using what he described as the AIR philosophy — accountability, integrity and respect.
He said the department will focus on building trust within the community and ensuring that its values guide decision-making, shape its culture and strengthen relationships with residents.
Alexander also emphasized the importance of partnerships between law enforcement, residents, businesses, schools, faith organizations and other community groups to address public safety concerns and improve quality of life.
City officials expressed confidence in Alexander’s leadership during the ceremony. Mayor Beverly Nash said public safety remains a priority as the city continues to grow, while City Manager Roger Milton thanked Assistant Chief Robinson for serving in an interim leadership role during the search process.
In Gretna, City Manager Antonio Jefferson praised Alexander’s service, noting his commitment to public safety and community relationships made a lasting impact on the city. Gretna officials have announced they will begin the process of recruiting a new police chief immediately and will share additional information about the transition as it becomes available.
Alexander officially assumed his duties as Quincy’s police chief on June 15.
