Teen killed in U.S. 27 crash

Driver arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

A 14-year-old Havana teen was killed in a Saturday night crash on U.S. 27 has been identified as Zayden Swango.

The crash occurred at about 9:44 p.m. May 16 near John Yawn Place in Gadsden County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Investigators said a 22-year-old woman from Jonesboro, Arkansas, was driving an Infiniti Q50 south in the outside southbound lane of U.S. 27 while Swango was riding his bicycle south on the paved shoulder.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the driver failed to maintain her lane and traveled from the roadway onto the outside paved shoulder, striking Swango.

After the collision, the vehicle left the scene, according to investigators.

Swango was transported to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The Florida Highway Patrol said deputies with the Leon County Sheriff’s Office later located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop in Leon County. Troopers responded to the scene, secured the vehicle and detained the driver.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the driver was arrested for suspected driving under the influence, among other charges. She was being held in the Leon County Detention Facility on a $50,000 bond.
