As the nation marks its 250th anniversary, residents will have the opportunity to look back at local history when a time capsule sealed 50 years ago is opened for public viewing.
The time capsule was placed by First Baptist Church of Chattahoochee on July 4, 1976, during the United States Bicentennial celebration. The capsule is scheduled to be opened July 4, 2026.
Items from the capsule will be displayed to the public from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Chattahoochee.
The display will give visitors a chance to see artifacts preserved from 1976, including newspapers, photographs, letters, books, memorabilia and other items that captured life in the community and across the nation at the time.
Residents attending the city’s Independence Day fireworks celebration are encouraged to stop by the church and view the exhibit before the evening festivities.
The opening comes 50 years after the capsule was sealed and coincides with nationwide observances commemorating America’s 250th birthday.
