As summer comes to an end, one of the most anticipated times of the year for parents is back-to-school season. With the first day of school quickly approaching, it’s important for both parents and students to feel prepared for the new school year.
Back-to-school shopping can be overwhelming as the cost of school supplies continues to rise. Fortunately, communities across the region host backpack giveaways, resource fairs and other events designed to help families save money while preparing students for the classroom.
Here are some upcoming opportunities in Gadsden and Leon counties.
Florida’s Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday
Florida’s Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday runs from July 20 through Aug. 10. During the tax holiday, qualifying clothing, footwear and backpacks priced at $100 or less are exempt from sales tax. School supplies priced at $50 or less also qualify, along with eligible computers and related accessories priced at $1,500 or less.
Gadsden County
15th Annual Back-to-School Resource Fair
Sunday, Aug. 9
2 to 5 p.m.
Old Havana Northside High School, Carver Avenue, Havana
Hosted by Eric Hinson and the One Gadsden Foundation, this free community event will offer school supplies, toiletries, haircuts, health screenings, giveaways, entertainment, food and drinks.
Leon County
7th Annual James Coleman Drive-Thru Backpack Giveaway and Food Distribution
Saturday, July 25
9 to 11:30 a.m.
Bond Elementary School
The event will provide free backpacks filled with school supplies while supplies last.
Cheers and DJ Demp Foundation Back 2 School Backpack Giveaway
Saturday, Aug. 1
10 a.m. to noon
2415 S. Adams St., Tallahassee
Families can receive free backpacks, school supplies and enjoy entertainment.
Whole Child Leon’s 5th Annual Jumpstart 2 Success
Saturday, Aug. 8
8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Lively Technical College
The event will feature free backpacks, school supplies, health screenings, games and additional community resources.
Milk Me Treats’ 4th Annual Packs 4 Success Back-to-School Drive

The event will include free backpacks filled with school supplies, haircuts and hairstyling, entertainment and family activities.
KidsStreet Urgent Care Back-to-School Bash
