It’s that time of year again where shoppers flock to find a unique gift to share with their loved one on Christmas morning, and the West Gadsden Historical Society believes they may have a solution for the gift-buying difficulty that almost everyone meets during the holidays.
The historical society will host its holiday bazaar on December 4 – making this year the second annual bazaar in Greensboro.
Through this bazaar, the West Gadsden Historical Society hopes to help preserve the history, cultures, and memories of Gadsden County.
The Christmas Bazaar is just one of many public outreach projects to ensure that the citizens of Gadsden County get an opportunity to view their museums and celebrate the beautiful Gadsden County community.
Since the Christmas season is the holiday for bringing the community together in hopes of a ‘Christmas Miracle,’ the mission of the Christmas Bazaar is to bring the community together and meet new people.
The society believes that it is only through sharing memories that Gadsden County’s histories and stories can be preserved.
The bazaar is also to assist local vendors and offer a safe and fun environment for Greensboro visitors.
The bazaar and the society will host various craft and art vendors from regional areas who provide those one-of-a-kind items that you may be looking for on your Christmas list!
Locals and visitors alike are asked to come out to the bazaar and support local artisans.
The bazaar will conduct events such as the Arts and Crafts Vendors opening between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., as well as bake sales and Christmas cookie distributions.
Santa and his Elves will be in attendance as well, beginning at 11 a.m.
Washpot Brunswick Stew serving will start at 11:30 a.m.
Throughout the event, live music will be performed by The Pepper Drive Band, featuring Gadsden County’s very own George Johnson, who will be performing at noon on the Depot Dock.
Lastly, the bazaar will end with a train whistle demonstration at the old train depot museum, beginning at 1 p.m.
The entire bazaar will take place at the Greensboro Depot, located at 115 Duffle Avenue, in Greensboro.
The Christmas bazaar will also serve as the release party for the West Gadsden Historical Societys’ newest book, A Trip on the Apalachicola Northern Railroad.
It is an area history and heritage cookbook, where you can get your appetite prepared for the classic recipes and old-time tales of the Florida Panhandle’s revolutionary railroad, the Apalachicola Northern Railroad.
Jane W. Clark, President of the West Gadsden Historical Society, mentions the purpose of their newest book and why it is vital to the history of Gadsden County and its surrounding areas.
“We tend to romanticize the past, most especially when set to the sound of a night train whistle and the rhythmic chants of the gandy dancers. This book does nothing to dispel that sentiment,” Clark states. “It is historically accurate and impeccably well researched. The stories and recipes that typify the 97 miles of the Apalachicola Northern Railroad track from River Junction to Port St. Joe evokes the poignant past.”
Clark says the collection reveals the sweeping changes that the past 100 years of progress have left on the landscape and social structures of the railroad communities, such as Greensboro, that bordered the Apalachicola Northern Railroad.
Clark adds that the cookbook and historical collection contains stories that may have been lost – but that this book gives a chance to be rekindled, bringing the past back to life.
