May Yards of the Month celebrate Spring in Havana

It is said that April’s rains bring May flowers, and while the saying does less for Florida lawns (that get rain just as much in May as they do April), these beautiful lawns and gardens for May’s Yards of the Month show that the warm spring weather and showers are definitely doing wonders!

Every month, the Havana Garden Club recognizes two yards (one residential, one commercial) for the honor of being the Havana Yard of the Month.

This month, the residential award went to Willis and Linda Rabon of Tallavana Trail.

While most of the Rabon’s lawn cannot be seen from the road, the driveway up to the Rabon home is splendid in and of itself.

“The driving…is lined with flowering trees and the area around the house is [a] veritable riot of color,” says Dianne Croley, with the garden club’s yard selection committee.

The beds around the Rabon’s home are filled with colorful annual flowers, most of which Linda started from seed in a large greenhouse on the premises.

Croley adds that the garden club is looking forward to seeing what sort of gardening delights take place in the Rabon’s yard as summer approaches.

The Commercial Yard of the Month award was presented to Kellum’s Furniture.

Located at 106 North Main Street, in downtown Havana, this business is owned by longtime Havana merchants, Jim and Betty Kellum.

“We ran into Betty Kellum as we were putting up the Yard of the Month sign, and she said that the colorful plants in the urns by the front door were the work of their store manager, Lou Arnesto,” writes Croley. “Lou’s work has added a nice pop of color to downtown Havana.”

The Havana Garden Club is currently accepting nominations for future Yards of the Month.

Nominations can be either for the commercial or residential award.

If you would like to nominate someone, or yourself, for the Yard of the Month awards, call Dianne Croley at (850) 539-8191.

The nominated yard (residential or commercial) must be within the 32333 zip code.

The Commercial Yard of the Month for May was presented to longtime Havana merchants, Jim and Betty Kellum of Kellum Furniture. The Kellum storefront was beautified by
shop employee Lou Arnesto, whose floral handiwork has brought a pop of color to downtown Havana.
The Residential Yard of the Month for May was awarded to Linda and Willis Rabon of Tallavana Trail. The Rabon’s cozy home and lawn is not visible from the road, but the gar-
den club highly praised Linda’s gardening and seed-starting prowess.
