Red, White, and Bloom – Havana’s July Yards of the Month bring color to summertime

July is a month of summertime delights: fireworks, hot dogs, barbecue, and community gatherings.

It is also a month of color, and the various lawns around Havana are putting their best foot forward when it comes to celebrating summer in proper color.

Every month, the Havana Garden Club recognizes two yards (one residential, one commercial) for the honor of being the Havana Yard of the Month.

This month, the July winners for the Residential Yard of the Month award are Mary and Earnest Moore, of Stillwater Lane.

The couple have been in their home for roughly four years, and during this time their well-kept lawn has caught the eye of the Havana Garden Club members many times, according to club member Dianne Croley.

It was a tip from one of the Moore’s neighbors, however, that prompted garden club members to look closer; the Moores recently added an attractive bed of trees and blooming plants in the space between their home and the street.

It was this new lawn development that prompted the garden club to proclaim the Moore lawn to be Havana’s July Residential Yard of the Month.

“We think you will agree that the Moore’s home is deserving of this month’s award,” added Croley.

The Commercial Yard of the Month award was presented to the congregation of The First Presbyterian Church of Havana, which is located at 213 1st Street Northeast.

The church was selected for the award due to its colorful display of Sunpatiens in the church’s front garden; church members Anne Moreland and Jo Davis are responsible for the cultivation of the flower bed.

First Presbyterian Church of Havana is pastored by Luis Oscasio.

The Havana Garden Club is currently accepting nominations for future Yards of the Month.

Nominations can be either for the commercial or residential award.

If you would like to nominate someone, or yourself, for the Yard of the Month awards, call Dianne Croley at (850) 539-8191.

The nominated yard (residential or commercial) must be within the 32333 zip code.
