Security guard killed at internet cafe in attempted armed robbery

The Gadsden County  Sheriff’s Office responded to Evan’s Quality Grocery Meats and Deli shortly after midnight on Wednesday Nov. 15 in reference to a shooting.

The store, located at  6688 Florida-Georgia Hwy. in Havana, also houses an adult arcade.

When deputies arrived they found one victim suffering from gunshot wounds and one victim deceased, a press release from the sheriff’s office states.

The surviving victim was transported to a local hospital where she was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Gadsden County Sheriff’s Office officials say two men attempted to rob the internet cafe before gunshots were exchanged between the two men and a security guard.

During the exchange, the café’s clerk was struck in the foot and was later transported to a nearby hospital, officials say. The guard was shot and killed during the shootout.

An investigation led to two suspects who were taken into custody. Kelvin Brown was charged with attempted robbery, felony murder, felony attempted murder, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Ty’Ron Washington was charged with attempted robbery, felony murder, felony attempted Murder.

Brown, who was shot by the guard, was hospitalized, officials say.

Family members of the deceased have identified the security guard as Lewis Butler, who also served as a pastor in Bainbridge.
