Sneads schools hang on to high marks; Grand Ridge surges

Schools in East Jackson County are celebrating following the Florida Department of Education’s recent release of 2018-2019 school grades.

A rare feat for Panhandle schools, for the fourth year in a row Sneads Elementary distinguished itself with an “A” ranking. That’s in spite of the disruption caused by Hurricane Michael, the October 2018 Cat5 storm that laid waste to much of Jackson County, including Sneads and surrounding communities.

And speaking of Hurricane Michael damage, Grand Ridge School was particularly hard hit, suffering substantial damage to many key campus facilities. Yet the pre-k through eighth grade school surged from a “C” grade for the 2017-2018 school term – its third C in a row – to an “A” this past year, the 2018-19 school term.

Sneads High School lost a bit of ground, going from an “A” ranked school in 2018 to a “B” in 2019. Regardless, both Sneads schools plus Grand Ridge easily outshined their counterparts in the rest of the county in this most recent round of state evaluations. Except for these bright spots in East Jackson, most of Jackson County’s public schools fared similarly to schools in neighboring Gadsden County: marginal declines, few gains.

Below is a complete listing of school grades for Jackson County. Additional data from the Florida Department of Education’s 2019 evaluations can be viewed at SneadsSentinel.com.
